On mappings with φ-contractive iterate at a point on generalized metric spaces

Abstract

We prove a set of fixed point theorems for mappings with φ-contractive iterate at a point in a class of generalized metric spaces. This is a generalization of some well-known results for Guseman and Matkowski types of fixed point results in metric and generalized metric spaces.

1 Introduction and preliminaries

In 1975 Matkowski introduced the following class of mappings.

Definition 1.1 [1]

Let T be a mapping on a metric space (X,d). Then T is called a weak contraction if there exists a function φ from [0,) to itself satisfying the following:

    φ is nondecreasing,

  2. (ii)

    lim n φ n (t)=0 for all t>0,

  3. (iii)

    d(Tx,Ty)φ(d(x,y)) for all x,yX.

In the same paper he proved the existence and uniqueness of a fixed point for such type of mappings. This result is significant because the concept of weak contraction of Matkowski type is independent of the Meir-Keeler contraction [2], and it was generalized in different directions [310]. Matkowski generalized his own result proving a theorem of Segal-Guseman type [11].

Theorem 1.1 [4]

Let (X,d) be a complete metric space, T:XX, and φ:[0,)[0,). If φ is nondecreasing, lim t (tφ(t))=, lim k φ k (t)=0 for t>0, and for each xX there is a positive integer n=n(x) such that for all yX,

then T has a unique fixed point aX. Moreover, for each xX, lim k T k (x)=a.

The aim of this paper is to show that this result is valid in a more general class of spaces and wide class of functions φ.

In 1963, Gähler introduced 2-metric spaces, but other authors proved that there is no relation between the two distance functions and there is no easy relationship between results obtained in the two settings. Dhage introduced a new concept of the measure of nearness between three or more objects. But the topological structure of so-called D-metric spaces was incorrect. Finally, Mustafa and Sims [12] introduced the correct definition of a generalized metric space as follows.

Definition 1.2 [12]

Let X be a nonempty set, and let G:X×X×X R + be a function satisfying the following properties:

(G1) G(x,y,z)=0 if x=y=z;

(G2) 0<G(x,x,y), for all x,yX, with xy;

(G3) G(x,x,y)G(x,y,z), for all x,y,zX, with zy;

(G4) G(x,y,z)=G(x,z,y)=G(y,z,x)= (symmetry in all three variables);

(G5) G(x,y,z)G(x,a,a)+G(a,y,z), for all x,y,z,aX.

Then the function G is called a generalized metric, abbreviated G-metric, on X, and the pair (X,G) is called a G-metric space.

Clearly these properties are satisfied when G(x,y,z) is the perimeter of the triangle with vertices at x, y, and z R 2 . Moreover, taking a in the interior of the triangle shows that (G5) is the best possible.

Example 1.1 [12]

Let (X,d) be an ordinary metric space, then (X,d) defines G-metrics on X by

Example 1.2 [12]

Let X={a,b}. Define G on X×X×X by

G(a,a,a)=G(b,b,b)=0,G(a,a,b)=1,G(a,b,b)=2,

and extend G to X×X×X by using the symmetry in the variables. Then it is clear that (X,G) is a G-metric space.

The following useful properties of a G-metric are readily derived from the axioms.

Proposition 1.1 [12]

Let (X,G) be a G-metric space, then for any x, y, z and a from X it follows that:

Definition 1.3 [12]

Let (X,G) be a G-metric space, and let { x n } be a sequence of points of X. A point xX is said to be the limit of the sequence { x n } if lim n , m G(x, x n , x m )=0, and one says that the sequence { x n } is G-convergent to x.

Proposition 1.2 [12]

Let (X,G) be a G-metric space, then for a sequence { x n }X and a point xX the following are equivalent:

    { x n } is G-convergent to x,

  2. 2.

    G( x n , x n ,x)0 as n,

  3. 3.

    G( x n ,x,x)0 as n.

Definition 1.4 [12]

Let (X,G) be a G-metric space, a sequence { x n } is called G-Cauchy if for every ε>0, there is NN such that G( x n , x m , x l )<ε, for all n,m,lN, that is, if G( x n , x m , x l )0 as n,m,l.

Proposition 1.3 [12]

In a G-metric space (X,G), the following are equivalent:

  1. 1.

    the sequence { x n } is G-Cauchy,

  2. 2.

    for every ε>0, there exists an n 0 N such that G( x n , x m , x m )<ε, for all n,m n 0 .

A G-metric space (X,G) is G-complete (or complete G-metric), if every G-Cauchy sequence in (X,G) is G-convergent in (X,G).

Proposition 1.4 [12]

Let (X,G) be a G-metric space, then the function G(x,y,z) is jointly continuous in all three of its variables.

Definition 1.5 (X,G) is symmetric G-metric space if G(x,y,y)=G(y,x,x) for all x,yX.

Fixed point theorems in symmetric G-metric space are mostly consequences of the related fixed point results in metric spaces. In this paper we discuss the non-symmetric case.

In [13] it was shown that if (X,G) is a G-metric space, putting δ(x,y)=G(x,y,y), (X,δ) is a quasi-metric space (δ is not symmetric). It is well known that any quasi-metric induces different metrics and mostly used are

(μ) μ(x,y)=δ(x,y)+δ(y,x),

(ρ) ρ(x,y)=max{δ(x,y),δ(y,x)}.

The following result is an immediate consequence of above definitions and relations.

Theorem 1.2 Let (X,G) be a G-metric space and let D{δ,ρ}. Then

  1. 1.

    { x n }X is G-convergent to xX if and only if { x n } is convergent to x in (X,D);

  2. 2.

    { x n }X is G-Cauchy if and only if { x n } is Cauchy in (X,D);

  3. 3.

    (X,G) is G-complete if and only if (X,D) is complete.

Recently, Samet et al. [14] and Jleli-Samet [13] observed that some fixed point theorems in the context of a G-metric space can be proved (by simple transformation) using related existing results in the setting of a (quasi-) metric space. Namely, if the contraction condition of the fixed point theorem on G-metric space can be reduced to two variables, then one can construct an equivalent fixed point theorem in setting of usual metric space. This idea is not completely new, but it was not successfully used before (see [15]). Very recently, Karapinar and Agarwal suggest new contraction conditions in G-metric space in a way that the techniques in [13, 14] are not applicable. In this approach [16], contraction conditions cannot be expressed in two variables. So, in some cases, as is noticed even in Jleli-Samet’s paper [13], when the contraction condition is of nonlinear type, this strategy cannot be always successfully used. This is exactly the case in our paper.

For more fixed point results for mappings defined in G-metric spaces, we refer the reader to [3, 6, 9, 10, 1536].

2 Main result

A generalization of the contraction principle can be obtained using a different type of a nondecreasing function φ:[0,)[0,). The most usual additional properties imposed on φ are given using a combination of the next seven conditions:

Some of the noted properties of φ are equivalent, some of them imply others, some of them are incompatible. The next lemma discusses some of the relations between properties ( φ 1 )-( φ 7 ), especially those which are used in this paper to define a generalized contraction.

Proof (i) ( φ 3 ) ( φ 2 ): If for some t>0, φ(t)t, then, knowing that φ is nondecreasing, φ i (t) φ i 1 (t)φ(t)t>0. It means that lim i φ i (t)0, which contradicts ( φ 3 ).

( φ 3 ) ( φ 4 ): Let { t i }[0,) be any sequence such that t i + 1 φ( t i ). Using the implication ( φ 3 ) ( φ 2 ), we get t i φ( t i 1 ) φ 2 ( t i 2 ) φ i ( t 0 ) and lim i t i lim i φ i ( t 0 )=0.

( φ 4 ) ( φ 3 ): We assume that for some t>0, lim i φ i (t)=a>0. Since ( φ 4 ) ( φ 2 ), the sequence t i = φ i (t) satisfies condition t i + 1 = φ i + 1 (t)=φ( φ i (t)) φ i (t)= t i , but it converges to a>0. That contradicts ( φ 4 ).

(ii) It is enough to prove that ( φ 2 ) ( φ 3 ): We assume that for some t>0, lim i φ i (t)=a>0. Since { φ i (t)} is a nonincreasing sequence, by the right continuity of φ, φ(a)=φ lim i φ i (t)= lim i φ i + 1 (t)=a>0, i.e. 0<a=φ(a), which contradicts ( φ 2 ).

(iii), (iv) are obvious, so the proof is omitted.

(v) The function

Theorem 2.1 Let (X,G) be a complete G-metric space, T:XX, where the nondecreasing function φ satisfies ( φ 5 ) or ( φ 6 ) together with ( φ 3 ) or ( φ 4 ) and for each xX there exists a positive integer n=n(x) such that

Proof Let the nondecreasing function φ satisfy ( φ 6 ) together with ( φ 3 ) (weak contraction in the sense of Matkowski). Then by Proposition 1.1(3), in a non-symmetric G-metric space we have

for all x,yX. So, one can apply the Matkowski fixed point theorem if the function 2φ= φ ˜ satisfies the conditions ( φ 3 ) and ( φ 6 ). Since there exist functions φ which satisfy ( φ 3 ) and ( φ 6 ), but 2φ does not (for example φ(t)= t 1 + t , t0), the Jleli-Samet technique [13] is not applicable. We are going to prove our theorem using the G-metric G.

We first prove by mathematical induction that, for every xX, the orbit { T k x } k is bounded.

Fix xX, fix the integer s, 0s<n=n(x) and put

Using (1), we get

In order to prove that T n ( a ) a=a, we assume that G(a, T n ( a ) a, T n ( a ) a)=ε>0. Using the same arguments as in the previous part of the proof, we see that

From the last contradiction we conclude that T n ( a ) a=a.

Suppose that there is a point bX, ba, such that T n ( a ) b=b. Then, by (1),

This contradiction proves that a is a unique fixed point of T n ( a ) . According to Ta= T n ( a ) Ta and from the uniqueness which has been proved already, we deduce that Ta=a.

Next, we claim that lim k T k x=a, for each xX. To prove this, fix xX, sN, 0s<n(a) and put

In other cases (when we use ( φ 5 ) instead of ( φ 6 ) or ( φ 4 ) instead of ( φ 3 )), by Lemma 2.1, the same conclusion can be drawn. □

Corollary 2.1 Let (X,G) be a complete G-metric space, T:XX and for each xX there exists a positive integer n=n(x) such that

Proof The function φ(t)=qt, t[0,), satisfies ( φ 3 ) and ( φ 6 ), so the corollary is a consequence of Theorem 2.1. □

From the proof of Theorem 2.1 we can see that it would be enough to impose certain assumptions not for all elements from X but only over some subset B of X, just as was done by Guseman [11]. The next theorem is a Guseman type of fixed point theorem in a G-metric space.

Theorem 2.2 Let T be a selfmapping of a complete G-metric space (X,G). If there exists a subset B of X such that T(B)B, T satisfies (1) over B and for some x 0 X, { T n x 0 : n 0 } ¯ B, then there exists a unique uB such that Tu=u and lim k T k y=u for each yB. Furthermore, if T satisfies (1) over X, then u is unique fixed point in X and lim k T k y=u for each yX.

Remark 2.1 Taking φ(t)=qt, 0<q<1, by Theorem 2.2 we obtain the fixed point result from [23] or [24], so Theorem 2.2 is also a generalization of the Guseman fixed point result from [11].

Corollary 2.2 Let (X,G) be a complete G-metric space, T:XX, and for each xX there exists a positive integer n=n(x) such that

Proof Since the function φ(t)= t 1 + t , t[0,), satisfies ( φ 3 ), ( φ 4 ), ( φ 5 ), and ( φ 6 ), we can apply Theorem 2.1. Also for that φ, the appropriate version of Theorem 2.2 can be formulated in a similar way as was done in this corollary. □

If n(x)=mN, for each xX, it is easy to see that condition ( φ 5 ) or ( φ 6 ) in Theorem 2.1 can be omitted. This version of Theorem 1.2 is an improvement and another proof of Theorem 3.1 (Corollary 3.2) from [9]. But in that case it would be more appropriate to use the metric ρ, which reduces (1) to ρ( T m x, T m y)φ(ρ(x,y)), x,yX and enables the use of well-known results in metric spaces.

Proposition 2.1 Let (X,G) be a complete G-metric space, where φ is a nondecreasing function satisfying ( φ 3 ). If T:XX satisfies

The next theorem is also a Guseman type of fixed point theorem in a G-metric space. The assumptions about the contractor φ is different with respect to Theorem 2.2. Similarly as in previous analysis, the next theorem can be applied in a metric space and in cases where some special form of function φ is used.

In the last theorem in this paper we consider a common fixed point for a family of selfmappings with the property of a contractive iterate at a point. The generalized contractive condition is imposed over a subset of a G-metric space.
